What’s the next step for a business school that’s known for blazing a trail for design in management? That boasts the first dedicated design lab in a b-school? That offers an MBA named one of the top 30 design programs in the U.S.? Establishing a design department, that’s what!

Weatherhead has just launched the Department of Design & Innovation, which brings together faculty from the marketing, policy, strategy and information systems fields. Dick Buchanan, PhD, (seen in picture) chairs the new department. Buchanan came to Weatherhead from Carnegie Mellon, where he headed up the School of Design. Some may assume that “posters and toasters” are what design is all about--in other words, attractive visuals and nifty products. But techniques from the world of design can be applied to problem solving in any context.

The diverse faculty within the Department of Design & Innovation will focus on two core priorities:

  1. Creating knowledge for generating novel and valuable products, services and systems.
  2. Developing organizational leaders and entrepreneurs who are skilled in designing innovative, value-creating relationships with customers, stakeholders and society.

“This first-of-its-kind department is an important step in continuing our tradition of training dynamic business leaders who are prepared for an economy that demands innovation in order to achieve success,” says Buchanan.
