In 1964, Weatherhead’s Organizational Behavior (OB) Department created the field’s first doctoral program. Today, our department is also home to one of the nation’s finest and most innovative master’s degree programs: the Master of Science in Positive Organization Development and Change (MPOD). We continue to maintain one of the nation’s largest and best PhD programs in OB, attracting students from around the world.
Our primary focus in teaching and research is leading and managing change at the individual, team, organizational, and societal levels. The OB Department prides itself on its past and maintains a spirit of inquiry that continues to inspire new directions. Among our faculty are thought leaders in such areas of keen contemporary interest as emotional intelligence, appreciative inquiry, gender, diversity and inclusion, sustainable value, experiential learning and adult development, resonant leadership, complex systems, organization citizenship behavior, high-performing teams, team and organizational coordination, and positive organization development, making up a department that the Financial Times ranks #3 in the world. We have worked on applied research in laboratory and field settings with a range of large organizations and networks, including the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE program, Walmart, the United Nations Global Compact, the American Dairy Association, the European Social Fund, the U.S. Navy, Ford, GTE, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and numerous universities, city governments, health care centers, and school systems.
